Earth in the Balance.

If you are a member of the military who supports the withdrawal of troops . . .
An Appeal for Redress
from the War in Iraq

As a patriotic American proud to serve the nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in Congress to support the prompt withdrawal of all American military forces and bases from Iraq . Staying in Iraq will not work and is not worth the price. It is time for U.S. troops to come home.

Every day enough sunlight falls to the earth to supply the energy for every one of planet Earth's 5.9 billion inhabitants for 27 years.

Making Clean Energy Pay
In Ontarios, Utilities ordered to compensate homeowners for power from solar, wind, water projects.
US to Cut funding For Two Renewable Energy Sources

From ThinkProgress.org:
The Bush administration has proposed eliminating funding for two renewable energy sources: hydropower and geothermal power research. Federal studies suggest that the "costs of lost opportunities from dropping such research could be enormous in the long run."

A secret memo by the coal industry

From Think Progress - LEAKED MEMO: Coal Industry Coordinating Propaganda Blitz Attacking Global Warming Science
A secret memo by the coal industry details a coordinated campaign to spread misinformation about global warming. The memo expresses fear that if the government addresses climate change ? through a carbon tax or regulating greenhouse gasses ? it will cut into their profits.Their solution: "support the scientific community that is willing to stand up against the alarmists." (The memo also refers to people who believe in global warming science as those "whose true motivation is to stop growth, develop renewable resources [and] discontinue the use of fossil fuels, especially coal.")

Smart Energy Summer to Roll Out Across America
New Campaign to Engage Americans on Sierra Club Vision for America's Energy Future

WASHINGTON - July 3 - The Fourth of July is a time when we celebrate our values, history, accomplishments, and the unique power of the American spirit. Through ingenuity and sheer force of will America has overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. Today, America faces just such a challenge "dramatically transforming our economy and our energy use in order to end our dangerous addiction to oil and dependence on fossil fuels. Achieving these goals is especially urgent as we draw ever closer to a definitive moment in our confrontation with global warming.

In order to help America meet this challenge, the Sierra Club is launching its Smart Energy Summer. This campaign will engage people across the country in a conversation about how we can tackle global warming, end our oil dependence and implement the kind of smart energy solutions that will grow our economy and take us into a clean, renewable energy future. The Smart Energy Summer will conclude with the unveiling of the Sierra Club's comprehensive roadmap for our energy future, including a scientifically-vetted timeline demonstrating precisely which and in what proportion we will use each technology and energy source to move us past fossil fuels.

"Our leaders in Washington have failed to give the American people the energy policy they deserve and so desperately need," said Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club. "The Smart Energy Summer underscores our commitment to achieving a smart energy future for America. This future will leave behind the outdated technologies that threaten our environment and our climate in favor of clean, renewable technologies that have the potential to grow our economy and create thousands of American jobs."

The Dirty Truth about "Green Fuel"

Agribusiness giants want to produce the 'green fuel of the future' with their dirty coal-fired power plants. The Bush administration is eager to help.

The town of Columbus, Nebraska, bills itself as a "City of Power and Progress." If Archer Daniels Midland gets its way, that power will be partially generated by coal, one of the dirtiest forms of energy. When burned, it emits carcinogenic pollutants and high levels of the greenhouse gases linked to global warming.

Not So Green Fuel's Dirty Secret

Ethanol is not as green as it seems. The giant agribusiness
corporation, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), is burning coal for
power to make ethanol. Even without the coal, ethanol production
emits carbon monoxide, methanol, toluene and other volatile
organic compounds.

Worst

Worst President in U.S. History
"But somehow, in his first six years in office he has managed to combine the lapses of leadership, misguided policies and abuse of power of his failed predecessors. I think there is no alternative but to rank him as the worst president in U.S. history."  - -  Eric Foner

Several Presidents have done one or two of the items on the following list:, but which of them have done ALL of them?
* Started with a huge budget surplus and left office running gigantic deficits?
* Undermined American liberty, even to the point of disregarding habeas corpus?
* Explicitly specific laws that other Presidents have followed, such as FISA
* Grabbed unprecedented centralized power through signing statements and the legal philosophies of John Woo et al, at the expense of traditional American checks and balances
* Started a gigantic war BY CHOICE, utterly without planning for its aftermath?
* Lost that war, and most likely a second war (in Afghanistan) through pure negligence, as well?
* Spent years ignoring an environmental problem so large it represents a huge threat to national security (global warming), and at the same time working in all international forums to prevent others from acting?
* Transformed America from one of the most admired countries around the world to the most hated?
